New interim principal for UTSC

A new interim vice-president and principal has been appointed for UTSC. Professor Bruce Kidd is the current Warden of Hart House and a past dean of the faculty of physical education and health. He is replacing Franco Vaccarino who is to become University of Guelph’s new principal. Professor Kidd will serve from Feb. 27 to Mar. 1, 2015 or until a successor is appointed and takes office. During his assignment, Rita O’Brien will be serving as Acting Warden of Hart House.

Glam north at the DMG

The Doris McCarthy Gallery (DMG) will feature the work of various artists selected by curator Jennifer Runner and Alexander Irving, from Feb. 26 to Apr. 12. Celebrating its 10th anniversary with an exhibition depicting the Canadian North, the DMG features work integrating nature and contemporary life. Many of the works selected were recently acquired as part of a gift from the McCarthy Estate.

Increased society fees for 2014-2015

On Feb. 28, the SCSU announced an increase in student society fees starting Summer 2014. Full-time students will pay an increase of $95.01 per session ($19 for part-time) in UTSC Sports & Recreation Centre, due to a levy that was passed in 2010. During Fall 2014, students will see an increase in UTSC’s Dental Plan fee to $6.70 and the Accident & Prescription Drug Insurance Plan will increase to $5.66 per session. In addition to an increase of $0.11 in CFS/CFS-O’s membership free.  Other fee increases include SCSU membership fee to $0.37 for full-time and $0.02 for part-time students and an increase in $0.55 per session in the Student Centre fee for part-time students.

Jane Goodall hits campus

On Mar. 27, UTSC will host the 37th Watts Lecture with renowned primatologist Jane Goodall. Goodall, who has worked with chimpanzees for 45 years, will present her early research and experiences, as well as information on the Jane Goodall Institute – a  global leader in protecting chimpanzee habitats. Following her lecture, Goodall will hold a book signing in the Meeting Place. Her novels can be purchased at the signing and the UTSC bookstore.
